Converting Food into Energy
All movement depends on the muscles doing work, and energy is required by muscle
cells to perform work.
A number of different systems are available to supply energy.
These can be classified as aerobic or anaerobic:
- Aerobic processes involve the consumption of oxygen, anaerobic processes do not;
- Anaerobic metabolism can release energy at very high rates, but the total capacity
of the system is small, so you get tired pretty quickly.
With aerobic metabolism you cannot move very fast, but aerobic exercise can be sustained
for prolonged periods without the need to stop for recovery. Walking is aerobic
exercise.
