Hi everyone, this is the first year I have EVER entered any kind of running event and as I am unfit and over weight I don’t know how long it will take me to get around or if I’ll need oxygen when I finish.
I’ve taken notes from other people on the forum to get some tips on training which has been a great help, Thanks
I want to know if anybody who ran the event last year in Sheffield can tell me the route taken as I’d like to try running it a few times before the event and get an idea of how long it will take me and how hard it is.
Any info would be great.
See you in September; I’ll be the one at the back looking Scared and exhausted!!!!!

Hi Pherring!

I'm running at Sheffield as my first 10k too and I think I'll be at the back of the pack with you!

If you get any replies about the route I'd like to know too. I'm training in Hull which is substantially flatter than Sheff and am terrified that I'm not going to get enough hill-work done before the big day.

Does anyone know the route?!

Kat

Hello there katrinacockburn,
the Sheffield 10k will be my first as well and am already getting excited. At least I was until you mentioned hills.I too come from the hull area and have been happily going about my training on flat ground, not thinking of the conditions over there.
Oh well I suppose I can only do my best.Haven't done any running of any note since school many years ago.Found it hard to start with but with practice it got harder.Never mind I needed a challenge.Probably see you at the back as well were all the sencible people will be.

I've found last year's route and it's not as bad as I expected given Sheffield's hills! It has about 150feet of climbing on it in the first 5k, but as it's an out and back at least the second half is likely to be downhill! Hopefully it should be the same or similar this year.

That's sounds o.k. Here's hoping it's the same.Do you have anymore runs planned.I'm thinking of just doing the 1 this year and do some more next.Only thing is I don't know if that's a good idea. The winter months may become a little difficult having not done this for such a long time.

I haven't signed up for any more yet, mainly because I'm still trying to get through this one. I only started running to help my friend train for the London Marathon and a few weeks later she suggested we try a 10K run and I (naively) agreed :)

I prefer running when it's cooler and I love running in the rain so I'm hoping that the winter shouldn't pose too much of a problem. If it gets too bad I suppose I can always resort to treadmills.

Can I ask how far you are runnign at the minue? I've got a niggly achilles and I am seriously worried that I'm not getting enough distance covered every week. :(

At the moment I'm only doing 4 runs a week at around 3 to 4 miles a time. But week days are a little harder, having to do a round trip to work of 30 miles on bike then running at night is something to look forward to when I get home.
Having started running 2 and a half months ago I can see a lot of improvment.
About the achilles problem.I've had a couple of problems with one of my legs in particular and was told the best thing was to rest it and found that worked well. It's not a good idea trying to run with a problem that could get worse the more you run.Hope this helps.

hey guys

Iv heard that apaprantly the route has changed slighlty from last year. think the course will now follow Penistone Road. Im keeping my eye on the great run website because think a map of the route should be going up any day now!

i'm trying to remember what penistone road looks like and i'm fairly sure that the first part of it is flat... eek!

I'm getting really excited about this and want to know where we're going now!

Depending where it starts and where you're coming from, Sheffield has a fairly good Park and Ride system.

If the trams are running OK I'll be parking at Meadowhall or Nunnery Square and catching a tram in. If not then I'll park at my Mother-in-Law's house and beg for a lift!

the parking down sheffield is a pain, you could try the many park and rides but if you are driving there's plenty of car parks around the town hall and down the moor it's just getting to them.
penistone road isn't too bad, quite flat all way along and the only problem is near the start and finish as there's a little bit of a hill but nothing too steep.
i haven't had too much training over the last few weeks as i was suffering a torn shoulder muscle but fine now and just hope i finish before nightfall.
good look to everyone running, forecast is for rain so should be cool and see you at the back were all the good looking people are.
